The difference between domestic and commercial chairs
A chair is just a chair right ? – No not when you are buying chairs for a commercial environment. There is a world of difference between chairs which are manufactured for domestic use and those manufactured for the commercial market, where you require durability to withstand excessive use. Your chairs therefore need to be suitable for commercial use – what we in the trade call Contract furniture.
What is Commercial Contract Furniture
Contract furniture is used more regularly and treated differently to furniture you would use in your home. Contract furniture is therefore manufactured utilising high quality materials and construction and specifically designed and tested to be used within commercial environments in order to endure the demands of daily use whilst still looking good and fulfilling its function. When it comes to chairs that are upholstered be it semi upholstered chairs or fully upholstered chairs the upholstery must also adhere to “Crib 5”, a flame-retardant test required for furniture being used in public areas. Failure to adhere to this can at the very least result in hefty fines.

It is important important that your furniture reflects the style and brand of your business. Our chairs are suitable for use in commercial establishments including Restaurants, Bars, Hotels, Coffee shops, Cafes, Golf clubs, Universities, Canteens and Offices.
Choosing the right Chairs for your commercial venue
Wooden chairs – most are made from FSC-sourced beech, although other popular timber types include oak and ash. Available in both side chairs and armchairs in a variety of different designs some of which are stackable. Wooden chairs are often used in cafes, coffee shops, pubs and bars as they provide adequate comfort and are easy to wipe down and keep clean. They are also quite popular to use in restaurants and other commercial environments along with semi upholstered and upholstered chairs to provide a mix of furniture.
Semi upholstered chairs – mainly wooden framed chairs most commonly made from FSC-sourced beech but again also available in oak and ash, with upholstered seat or back (or sometimes both leaving a gap between the seat of the chair and the back ) Often used in restaurants, pubs, coffee shops, or environments where you want to offer your customers a little more comfort. Again semi upholstered chairs can be mixed with wooden chair to provide a mix on style.
Fully upholstered chairs – Wooden frame chairs most commonly made from FSC-sourced beech but can be available with metal frames too. Seats and backs can be upholstered in a wide choice of faux leathers or fabrics and sometimes a mix of both. Can be available in a “family” offering a matching side chair, armchair and high stool. Popular for use in restaurants, hotels, bars. pubs and environments where you want to offer your customer that extra comfort and style.
Polypropylene / Plastic chairs – Generally come with a choice metal frame or wooden legs or as a complete polypropylene chair (ie the whole chair is made in a single mould). A popular choice with cafes, canteens, office spaces and outdoor environments as they are lightweight so easy to move, can be stackable, often available in a wide range of colour choices and offer good value for money.
Metal Chairs – Metal is the strongest material for use in chair and stool construction. Often light weight so easy to move. Some, but not all chairs are suitable for outdoor use. Can be powder coated to provide a wide colour choice. Popular choice for cafes, canteens or environments looking for and industrial style look.
No matter what style of chair you are looking for we have a selection of stock chairs for those who may need a quick turnaround, or we can make to order enabling you to customise your chair to your colour choice.
